Côte d’Ivoire Opportunities in Open Block CI-706 Revealed by Multi-Azimuth GeoStreamer Data

The latest 3D GeoStreamer data for the Côte d'Ivoire licensing round will deliver high-quality, multi-azimuth illumination over open block CI-706, unlocking its remaining hydrocarbon potential.

The CDI Blk 706 dataset draws on a combination of broadband GeoStreamer technology for new acquisition, with reprocessing of conventional data using modern processing workflows. The new north-south acquisition, covering the majority of CI-706, will be processed with an existing east-west dataset to create a multi-azimuth product.

Multi-azimuth GeoStreamer data gives enhanced target illumination and excellent data quality at both ends of the frequency spectrum, with greater low-frequency penetration and higher frequency content to provide increased resolution and sharp imaging of subtle stratigraphic variations, enhancing future attribute analysis.

G&G from the Shelf to the Deep Water

The CDI Blk 706  survey will provide critical insight into the shelf-to-basin pathway of the West African Transform Margin where syn- and post-rift plays have had much success over the past decade. Multi-azimuth processing will reveal more detail of the syn-rift / transform tectonic system, and the migration paths of the post-rift channel and fan systems in the area.

CDI Blk 706  complements existing MultiClient 2D and 3D datasets in the region, extending 3D GeoStreamer coverage from the shelf to the deep water. This new dataset will aid understanding of depositional systems and reduce risks associated with hydrocarbon migration and trap integrity.

Recent exploration activity in Côte d’Ivoire has demonstrated a strong working petroleum system within the syn-rift (affected by syn-transform inversion) and post-transform tectonic phases.

Success has motivated explorers to look further afield, extrapolating known play trends and hunting new opportunities. The Morue-1X well (Anadarko and Total) and Saphir-1X well (Total) have proven a working hydrocarbon system in the previously underexplored western portion of the basin. Meanwhile, the Capitaine East-1X (Lukoil) and Paon (Anadarko) discoveries have proven the prospectivity of Upper Cretaceous oil-bearing stratigraphic plays in the deeper waters.

In response to this recent exploration interest, PGS has acquired 10 000 sq. km of new 3D data, reprocessed a further 5 000 sq. km of library data, and carried out a number of detailed studies of the Côte d’Ivoire area. PGS studies have provided critical insight into reservoir distribution and characteristics and highlighted a number of untested leads with many similarities to nearby discoveries.

Up-dip stratigraphic pinch-outs of post-transform channel and fan systems into the basin are imaged on existing data. The new multi-azimuth survey will improve understanding of the critical relationship between tectonic events and hydrocarbon migration.

Better imaging of the Lower Cretaceous syn-rift tilted fault block structure East Grand Lahou will provide a more thorough assessment of its exploration potential. Underlying 3D data over an existing well on the East Grand Lahou structure reveals that it did not test the structural closure but instead targeted the onlapping post-transform sediments.

Licensing Round

A number of areas been awarded offshore Côte d’Ivoire since the licensing round was initiated in October 2017. Block CI-706 remains open, with exploration risk now greatly reduced by this new dataset.

Data Availability

Benefits are available to early participants in the CDI Blk 706 multi-azimuth processing project. Please contact amme.info@pgs.com to discuss the options or to arrange a data show for the surrounding offshore Côte d’Ivoire library data. Data will be available in early 2019.
